Venture Capital Trusts
A Venture Capital Trust (VCT) is a particular type of investment company, established by the UK Government with tax reliefs to encourage the provision of risk capital for smaller companies. By definition therefore investments in a VCT carry a level of risk which means you may lose your original investment.
In order to receive the tax reliefs associated with VCTs, investors must hold their shares for a minimum period, currently five years, therefore an investment in a VCT should be considered a five- to seven-year investment.
In any case there is only a limited secondary market for shares in VCTs which may render such shares difficult to sell.
The regulations governing VCTs are subject to change.
Securing VCT tax reliefs is dependent on the circumstances of the individual, the conduct of the VCT and the nature of investee companies: if any fail to meet the requirements of HM Revenue & Customs, tax reliefs are likely to be cancelled.
Investors should ensure they have read and understood the risk warnings set out in the VCT prospectus before making an investment.
